Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sambit Patra on Thursday appealed to the global community to unite in condemning the reported vandalism of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Bangladesh, calling it a direct assault on cultural heritage and civilizational values.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, Patra said, “Tagore’s Kacharibari, built by his grandfather in Bangladesh, was deliberately attacked and damaged by miscreants on June 10. Reports suggest that members of Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam orchestrated the assault in a pre-planned manner over several days.”
He emphasized that the attack was not just on a historical structure, but a symbolic strike against the ideals of creativity, culture, and inclusiveness that Tagore stood for.
“Rabindranath Tagore is not just a literary giant; he is a global cultural icon. Attacking his home is akin to attacking his philosophy. This is why we call upon the global community—nations that value art, morality, and civilization—to come together and denounce this heinous act,” said Patra.
Criticizing the interim government in Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus, Patra expressed dismay over its inability to safeguard an international cultural monument. “We’re not interfering in Bangladesh’s internal matters, but when a monument of global significance is desecrated, it is an issue of international concern,” he said.
Highlighting the BJP’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural preservation, Patra reiterated, “Our party believes in ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Prayas.’ We call on all nations that revere culture and heritage to strongly condemn this incident and stand in solidarity against such cultural violence.”
The BJP’s remarks come amid growing outrage over the desecration of Tagore’s ancestral property, considered a cornerstone of Bengal’s intellectual and artistic legacy.
